Kimiko’s Pearl

AN EPIC TALE OF JAPANESE-CANADIAN INTERNMENT

The Bravo Niagara! Festival of the Arts commissioned Howard to write the story/scenario for “Kimiko’s Pearl,” a multidisciplinary work embracing music, dance, visual art and documentary photography. Inspired by the family history of Bravo Niagara! founders Christine Mori and Alexis Spieldenner, “Kimiko’s Pearl” traces the tragedies and triumphs of one family before, during and after Japanese-Canadian internment, from 1917 to the present. The work – performed by dancers of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet – features a score by Kevin Lau, sound design by Aaron Tsang, and choreography by Yosuke Mino. “Kimiko’s Pearl” premiered in St. Catharines, Canada, in June 2024.
