Prisoner of her past
Discovering a secret Holocaust story
Inspired by Howard’s memoir of the same name, the PBS documentary film traces his journey across the United States, Poland and Ukraine to understand why his 69-year-old mother believes her life is in danger. By finding relatives he didn’t know he had, unearthing buried war-crimes documents and finding witnesses to machine-gun massacres of Jews in his mother’s hometown, Howard pieces together what happened to his mother during the Holocaust. The film has been broadcast more than 500 times in 140-plus markets across the United States and beyond.
